Tragedy strikes in Bowler at an Independence Day celebration on July 4th 1914
Bowler, WI
The not yet fully ascended balloon caught fire during the demonstration with Art Marotz in the balloon. Mr. Marotz jumped and landed with the side of his head hitting rock.
Mr. Marotz was unconscious for days in Shawano, then was taken to Green Bay in a buckboard. He recovered but had a steel plate put in his head.
This information received from his son Roland Marotz who was born after this accident. These pictures were given by Mrs. Lena Fuhrman to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schultz, R#1, Bowler, who cleaned and gilded the frames.
