1894 – John Anton Lieg offering a ride home to residents of Keshena
Shawano, WI

This photograph from 1894 shows John Anton Lieg offering a ride home to some residents of Keshena.

They might have just purchased supplies and groceries at the Lieg general store. This photo was taken in back of the store. The store was and is still located at 207 N. Main Street in Shawano, the oldest original building on Main Street.

Anton and Gertrude Lieg traveled by stagecoach from Green Bay to Shawano and founded their first store in 1868 at 207 North Main Street. It was known as A. Lieg & Son. After Anton’s death, his son, J. A. Lieg took over the business. There are two other Lieg stores; 201 N. Main St. where DotCom Branding is located and 126 S. Main Street, the current home of Old Glory Candy.

The last Lieg business closed its doors in 1966. For 98 years, the Lieg family had one of the longest family-owned businesses in Shawano.
