Cattle Running at Large in Shawano
Shawano, Wisconsin
June 19, 1876

As you can see in the photo….in the early days of Shawano, livestock were running in the streets which were dirt. We had a big cattle problem on main street so our third mayor, H. Naber, and the council decided to take action!

Ordinance #5 from June 19, 1876 states cattle are prohibited in the city from December 1 to April 15 and if you’re caught with cattle in the city during those dates it will cost you $1 dollar for each head found “at large” in the city!

City of Shawano residents beware, don’t let your cattle run in the streets!
