A.J. Lieg Store
207 N. Main Street in Shawano
The Lieg Building at 207 N. Main Street in Shawano – one of the most important original structures on Main Street in Shawano is about to get a new owner. This brick Victorian has been described as the best preserved example of wooden store fronts on Main Street in Shawano.
You might drive past this old, dilapidated building every day and not know the history of this building or secrets it holds of the first Lieg business on Main Street 150 years ago. The other thing you might not know is, the Lieg family had businesses in three Main Street buildings; 207 N. Main, 201 N. Main, and 126 S. Main. All three still exist today.
We understand 207 N. Main will be sold in the next weeks. We hope the new owners respect this building and restore the original facade to the original appearance shown in the photo.
Anton and Gertrude Lieg traveled by stagecoach from Green Bay to Shawano and founded their first store in 1868 at 207 North Main Street. It was known as A. Lieg & Son. After Anton’s death, his son, J. A. Lieg took over the business. There are two other Lieg stores; 201 N. Main St. where DotCom Branding is located and 126 S. Main Street, the current home of Old Glory Candy.
The last Lieg business closed its doors in 1966. For 98 years, the Lieg family had one of the longest family-owned businesses in Shawano.
